UNICEF Poland has joined the international campaign “Schools for Africa”. We are hoping that together with your help and support we will be able to build and rehabilitate schools in Angola, thus creating appropriate learning environments for thousands of children. Let’s provide them with the opportunity for a better future!
The campaign is supported by Polish pop star Natalia Kukulska who recently became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. In that capacity she travelled to Angola to find out more about educational programmes - the only hope for children growing up in poverty and desperation.
Aims:
Together with your support, UNICEF Poland is planning to build and rehabilitate 50 schools in Angola, benefiting over 30 000 children.
Poland’s contribution is intended to help UNICEF achieve its goals in Angola over the next three years:
o To build 500 new schools
o To renovate 1000 schools
o To provide 1500 schools with safe water and appropriate sanitation facilities
o To provide all students with school materials and to train over 25 000 teachers
WHY HELP ANGOLA?
The almost 30 year long civil war in Angola not only took 1.5 million lives and caused millions to flee the country, but it also led to the breakdown of the national healthcare and educational systems. The infant mortality rate is one of the highest in the world – 260 per 1000 children die before reaching the age of 5 years. Children below 14 years account for over 40% of the country’s total population (over 15 million). About half of these children do not attend school, and the literacy rate is merely 67%. Only half of the population has access to clean water, and only 30% to adequate sanitation.
HOW MUCH IS NEEDED TO HELP:
o The cost of building a new school with a few classrooms and sanitation facilities – 90 000 PLN
o The cost of rehabilitating an existing school – 40 000 PLN
o The cost of building a new classroom – 40 000 PLN
o The cost of rehabilitating an existing classroom – 20 000 PLN
o A donation of 10 000 PLN – enough to provide 400 students with school materials
o A donation of 2 500 PLN – enough to provide 100 students with school materials
UNICEF is funded solely by its supporters’ voluntary donations. Each donation is important:
o Just for 2 PLN five children can be de-wormed (with a special tablet)
o Just for 5 PLN vaccines against measles can be administered to ten children
o 40 PLN is the cost of a training program for one teacher (with meals and learning materials provided)
“Schools for Africa” is one of the most successful campaigns ever conducted by UNCIEF. It has improved living and learning conditions for millions of children in Africa. Unfortunately, every second child in Angola grows up in an environment where ignorance, poverty and discrimination prevail. For this reason, through its “Schools for Africa” campaign, UNICEF collects funds to build and rehabilitate schools, providing them with sanitation facilities and access to safe drinking water.
BECOME A PARTNER OF UNICEF POLAND:
In October 2006 we have signed the agreement of strategic partnership with Orbis Hotel Group, the largest hotel company in Poland. From the beginning of January 2007 Orbis support “Schools for Africa” program encouraging hotel guests to donate to UNICEF by paying 5 PLN more for the bill or to throw money into the money-box, also by fundraising activities organizing by employees.
HELP US GIVE CHILDREN GROWING UP IN ANGOLA A HOPE FOR A BETTER LIFE! LET’S BUILD A BETTER WORLD. LET’S BUILD “SCHOOLS FOR AFRICA.”
