Fabryka Porcelany AS Ćmielów

2008-06-03
Fabryka Porcelany AS Ćmielów is one of Poland’s oldest porcelain factories. Ceramic production started in Ćmielów in the 18th century while the year 1804 marks the beginning of the town’s porcelain tradition. The Świt porcelain factory was set up in Ćmielów in 1936 as a spin-out from the existing porcelain company. Świt specialised in the manufacture of artistic porcelain figurines, coffee and tea sets, and vases. In 1996 the manufactory was privatised and renamed as Fabryka Porcelany AS Ćmielów.
REKLAMA

Artistic porcelain is what earned the Świt factory the greatest fame. Porcelain figurines designed in the 1950s and 1960s in the Moore and Picasso style at the Industrial Design Institute in Warsaw became the factory’s greatest international success. The figurines have found their way to galleries and museums in New York, Chicago, Paris, London, Moscow, the National Museums in Warsaw, Kraków and Kielce, the Regional Museums in Gliwice, Sandomierz, and Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, and many other places.
As artistic porcelain experts and connoisseurs have been on the lookout for the figurines, Fabryka Porcelany AS Ćmielów has resumed their production according to the original designs and launched the production of new models. Each figurine is now provided with its own certificate with the name of the design, product number, name of the designer and year of production. Each figurine also bears a pink stamp to prevent forgery. Additionally, the figurines have under-glaze factory marks, which enable their easy identification.
The porcelain figurines are avant-garde sculptures with sparse decoration and a perfectly balanced line, which is so typical of works made in the middle of the 20th century. The figurines were designed by artist and designers of the Industrial Design Institute, including Henryk Jędrasiak, Hanna Orthwein, Mieczysław Naruszewicz, Lubomir Tomaszewski and others. It was a really unique situation, which will never repeat itself, that such high-class artists worked together for the Industrial Design Institute, supporting each other in conditions which developed in Poland after World War II.
Lubomir Tomaszewski, now a professor living and teaching in the United States, still designs for us. His sculptures and other works of art have been exhibited in more than 200 galleries across the world. This is why we manufacture the figurines with a great care for detail and with the use of original models and moulds. The figurines are now sold not only in Poland but also on foreign markets. They are successfully exported to over 10 countries. Full of dynamism and joy, with unique hand-painted decoration, the figurines have no counterpart in the world. The designs can rightly be regarded as national heritage and deserve to be supported, protected and popularised in Poland and beyond.
