Polish family practice

2008-06-03
In Poland the market of private medical services is a competitive one. The patient is able to choose from among a number of smaller clinics and large hospitals, mostly run by international medical organizations. In this market, one medical centre stands out. ENEL-MED SA is a Polish family-run business founded by Adam Rozwadowski. He talks to Andrzej Kazimierski about ENEL-MED’s medical activities and its sponsorship of the arts.
REKLAMA

POLISH MARKET: Is success down to luck or hard work?

ADAM ROZWADOWSKI: It’s no use just hoping for a stroke of luck. But hard work alone does not necessarily always lead to success. It’s always a combination of both. We are now one of the leaders in medical services in Poland. But we owe it to our work and our ability to flexibly respond to current market demand.

Q: Could you give examples of how you have used market trends to your advantage?

A: I am an electrical engineer by training. I started out in private business in the 1980s. I set up a company dealing with electricity supplies for companies. It’s still an important growth area, but after a few years my wife and I decided to open a dental clinic complete with a laboratory and hotel accommodation for patients. It went on from there.

Q: In what way has ENEL-MED developed since then?

A: ENEL-MED today is eight hospitals and out-patients clinics with branches in Warsaw, Poznań and Wrocław. More clinics will soon be opened in Krakow, Łódź and Warsaw. We employ a staff of more than 750, including 350 doctors who are highly skilled specialists in all medical fields. Practically all of them have 2nd level degrees of medical specialization. That is why we are able to provide complete medical care to patients.

Q: But other clinics provide such services as well. Why should patients seek your help?

A: This centre is a family-owned business, but it also takes care of its patients the way a family doctor does. We do not just provide full medical care from consultations down to rehabilitation. We also make sure that patients feel at home. It’s no mere slogan. It’s what actually happens. That is why ENEL-MED’s share in the medical services market grows steadily by an average of 50 per cent a year. We offer tailor-made packages of services. At a monthly premium individual patients can take advantage of the Medi-Care package. The needs of companies are taken care of within the Enel-Care scheme, which helps keep personnel in good health. There is also the unique 24 Hours for Health package, which allows patients to undergo a comprehensive check-up in comfortable conditions. We also address our offer to other medical centres.

Q: How is this done?

A: We work together with other clinics. We perform specialist tests for 60 hospitals all over Poland, using the kind of sophisticated top-quality equipment they do not have. At this centre we conduct teleradiology test analyses. As a test is in progress at one of 25 hospitals a specialist sits at a computer at ENEL-MED analyzing the incoming test results. Hospitals find it very convenient, because they are able to carry out round-the-clock tests without their own specialists being present – specialists which are often in short supply.

Q: ENEL-MED has been honoured with the Warsaw Cultural Sponsor Award 2006…

A: The award was granted for the company’s activities at the local community level. We support the Świt community cultural centre situated not far from our largest clinic. ENEL-MED also provides medical care during the medieval knights’ tournament for the trophy of King Sigismund III Sabre.
