Environmental protection activities of Lubelski Węgiel Bogdanka SA

2008-06-25
Environmentally minded coal mine

By taking environmental protection measures, Lubelski Węgiel Bogdanka SA, the company that operates the Bogdanka coal mine in eastern Poland, tries to pursue sustainable development, which is strongly emphasised in Poland’s environmental policy.
REKLAMA

At the start of the 21st century, this policy has to be carried out with clarity and commitment to preserve natural resources for future generations.
As the Bogdanka coal mine is located in an area of special environmental importance, the company has to take care of the natural environment. The company takes numerous environmental measures and pursues environmental policy under its Integrated Quality and Environment Management System according to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. The system has helped the company to develop pro-environmental attitudes.
The coal mine poses no environmental hazard. The local environment has been monitored for over 25 years now and most mechanisms involved in the impact of mining activity on environmental quality in the vicinity of the coal mine are already well known. Since wetland and peat-bogs are the environmental assets protected in the area, it is important to reduce the impact of the coal mine on the hydrosphere and land surface.

Land protection
- efforts to reduce the amount of mining wastes deposited in tips and to increase their recovery to up to 80-90% and reuse for industrial purposes at the Ekoklinkier plant (production of construction materials) and the Chełm cement works, and for non-industrial purposes, including excavation reclamation, road repairs, and the construction of sports and recreation facilities, and hydraulic engineering structures;
- plans to build a small reservoir, called Szczecin, in a basin formed as a result of coal extraction in Ludwin and Puchaczów communes. The project is to be carried out in conjunction with the Provincial Drainage and Water Facility Authority in Lublin;
- plans to improve the local landscape through planting the colliery tip (tip reclamation);
- post-mining reclamation.

Water protection
- plans to reduce water flow from protected areas located in the northern part of the mining area by discontinuing drainage from flood land in the Bogdanka and Nadrybie fields;
- constant monitoring of the quality of mining water discharged to the Świnka river;
- plans to improve the efficiency of mining water treatment through the construction of a new sedimentation tank.

Air protection
- plans to modernise the flue gas desulphurisation facility and the dust collection system at the Ekoklinkier plant to improve cleaning efficiency.
