How ready is Poland for Euro 2012?

2008-07-04
Michel Platini President of the UEFA, the European football governing body, has arrived in Poland to evaluate the stage of preparations for EURO 2012. Taking stock of Poland’s preparations for the event co-hosted with Ukraine „Gazeta Prawna” reports that according to UEFA’s assessment there are no delays in the construction of the National Stadium.

If the project continues in the same manner as over the past months, the stadium will be built in two years. It can be also said that the section of A4 motorway from the south-eastern city of Rzeszów to the Ukrainian border will not be ready before 2012. Another six months are necessary to launch air connections with Ukraine - "Gazeta Prawna" says.
According to the newspaper the construction of motorways is badly delayed. The set-backs are caused by red tape. It seems unlikely that in 2012 the motorway will connect the Pomeranian city of Gdańsk with Silesia and the Slovak border. However experts believe the chance is slim that a motorway from Warsaw to Germany could be completed within 4 years. Construction work on the A2 motorway are currently being conducted on a short section but overall the procedures are at a more advanced stage.
- We will not be able to complete the Polish section of the motorway leading to Ukraine by 2012 - Adrian Furgalski of the Economic Consultants Team TOR is quoted as saying by “Gazeta Prawna”. It should be also expected that the section of the motorway between Rzeszów to the border will not be finished. The final decision about the exact location of the motorway has not yet been made and the land has not been purchased. The Ministry of Infrastructure is promising that legal procedures will be streamlined.
In Furgalski’s opinion only 75% of planned road infrastructure will be completed by 2012. It seems that the sports stadiums will be built in time as the construction of each of them takes 2 years. If Poland is to meet UEFA’s requirement and finish the stadiums’ construction in 2011, work should start in the spring of 2009.
