Polish Independence Day

On November 11, 1918 the Regency Council appointed general Józef Piłsudski Commander-in-Chief of Polish forces and asked him to form a government. The Second Republic of Poland was established.
The Independence Day was constituted and first celebrated in 1937. During World War II and from 1945 to 1989 in Peoples' Republic of Poland the holiday was forbidden. In 1989 the Independence Day became a national holiday once again and is one of the most significant state holidays.
