Ostróda in the running for EURO2012
Ostróda has become a popular tourist city in Western Mazury, on the E7 Warsaw-Gdansk route. In the last few years, it has won the title of the most popular tourist destination in Warmia and Mazury several times. It is famous for the unique in the world Ostródzko-Elbląski Canal, which in 2007 was ranked fifth among “Seven Polish Wonders”.
EURO 2012 in Ostróda?
The city wants to participate in the organisation of the European Soccer Championships in 2012. Its many attributes, including nature, excellent location, and rich and dynamically developing tourist facilities, make Ostróda an ideal place for an accommodation centre for one of the national teams during the prestige event. After two sets of eliminations it was the only city in Warmia and Mazury which qualified as 44th location in the competition to be awarded official EURO2012 Accommodation Centre status by UEFA. Ostróda is a serious contender to be in the winning finals in summer this year. About 20 locations will act as official accommodation centres.
The basic criteria to be awarded the status of accommodation centre is an appropriately high standard of sporting infrastructure and hotel facilities. Ostróda is creating facilities to meet such conditions. The construction of a beautiful, modern, high class sports and recreation complex for training will begin in spring this year
Located on the Drwęcki Lake, the complex covers an area of 7 ha., and includes the current stadium grounds and an old park complex – Collins Park. The new stadium has been designed to meet the PZPN and FIFA requirements.
Soccer Stadium
It includes the main heated, natural grass field of 68 x 105 metres, surrounded by covered stands with nearly 5,000 seats and a training field with synthetic grass of 65 x 90 m. Within the main stand, there will be a comfortable recreational base for players and other members of their team. The stadium will have artificial lighting. There will be change rooms, health facilities, quarters for trainers and judges and conference rooms with viewing terraces. The whole facility will be located by the lake, away from the city centre and busy streets. It will be a visitor friendly and safe place.
Sports and recreation facilities
Near the sports stadium there will be six tennis courts (including two all year round covered courts), ice skating ring open all year round, a climbing wall and skateboard ramp. The park area (Collins Park) will have various recreational facilities, including health walk paths, mini golf, rope and rock climbing, an outdoor fitness club, table tennis tables, volleyball and basket ball courts. The heritage park will be carefully restored and will have stylised furniture, lighting and sculptures.
Private investors are working on providing an appropriate hotel base in Ostróda for EURO2012. The strategic investor is the well known and respected through out the country local company Condohotels Group.
Not just a Holiday Park
The construction of a five star Holiday Park hotel will be built at the same time as the sports and recreation complex. Located 200 metres from the stadium, it is designed as an accommodation base for players. It is expected to be completed in 2010. There will be 304 comfortable rooms, a restaurant for 350 people, conference rooms, fitness and SPA centre, beauty salon and medical facilities. There will also be two four star hotels: The Platinum and Hotel Willa Port Resort. They will be great places for journalists, sponsors and personnel accompanying the players. It is planned that by 2012 Ostróda will have an additional 1,000 luxury beds. Soon the holiday season in this beautiful city will last all year round.
