Four Polish cities confirmed as Euro 2012 sites

2009-05-13

Four Polish cities: Warsaw, Gdansk, Poznan and Wroclaw have been confirmed by UEFAas venues that will host Euro 2012 football championship games. However, Ukraine’s hopes for co-hosting the championship on an equal footing with Poland were dashed when UEFA only approved the capital Kyiv.

Three other Ukrainian cities: Donetsk, Charkov and Lviv have until the end of November to prove that they can make it on time with infrastructure upgrades vital for Euro 2012 to take place.

A UEFA mission which visited Poland recently expressed satisfaction with the pace of work on Polish sports stadiums and infrastructure ahead of the event. The construction of a national stadium in the Polish capital Warsaw, which is likely to host the opening ceremony, recently gathered momentum. According to the organizers, the stadium is likely to be ready ahead of schedule. (rk)
