Dobrzeń hydro-electric power station officially opens
Dobrzeń Hydro-electric Power Station, the fourth unit of PGE Energia Odnawialna S.A. (PGE Renewable Energy S.A.) company on the Upper Odra River Cascade was opened on 6 May 2009. The first was commissioned in Januszkowice near Zdzieszowice in 2003, followed by those on the reservoirs in Krępna and Krapkowice.
The group of persons present at the opening ceremony of Dobrzeń Hydro-electric Power Station included Opolskie Province Governor Ryszard Wilczyński, Archbishop Alfons Nossol of Opole Diocese and representatives of local government and commune authorities. Mention must also be made of representatives of energy generating companies from PGE Renewable Energy capital group, power station workers and members of the local population. The tape was ceremoniously cut by: Krzysztof Konaszewski, board president of PGE Renewable Energy S.A.; Ryszard Wilczyński, Opole Province Governor; Abp. Alfons Nossol and Ryszard Śnieżek head of Dobrzeń Wielki commune.
Construction of the power station was commenced in 2006, the first commissioning being performed in December 2008. The power station is equipped with two generators driven by turbines each of 800 kilowatts, the annual generated electric energy to amount to around 10,000 MWh. The power station’s generating capacity is sufficient to feed a large county town or a commune of the size of Dobrzeń Wielki with electricity.
By delivering around 10,000 MWh energy annually to the national electricity grid, the power station will reduce emissions of gas, dust and flyash. 5,000 tons of coal would have to be combusted annually to produce an equivalent amount of energy from conventional sources, resulting in the delivery of around 24,000 tons of dust, 12,300 tons of carbon dioxide, 146 tons of sulphur and 1380 tons of ash. This new power station includes systems consistent with the most demanding environment protection standards.
Krzysztof Konaszewski, board president of PGE Renewable Energy S.A. remarks: “We are delighted that yet another investment in the Upper Odra River Cascade has concluded successfully. Further hydro electric power stations of 1 – 3 MW already figure in the Company’s plans, including the construction of another stage of the cascade in Oława”. The company has set itself the priority task to implement a policy of continuous growth of regional energy generating plants.
