International Energy Agency head optimistic about Poland’s energy strategy
Global trends in the production and consumption of energy, and the Polish Energy Policy until 2030 were the main items of a meeting in Warsaw between Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Economy Waldemar Pawlak and Nobuo Tanaka, the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency.
The Agency’s executive director expressed his appreciation for Poland’s energy strategy. – It contains all elements on which IEA is focused: diversification of supply sources and energy production technologies, strong emphasis on energy efficiency, development of new technologies and renewable energy sources – he said at the Economy Ministry headquarters during a press briefing. – We are also glad about Poland’s positive attitude to the development of nuclear energy – he added, and ensured that IEA will support Poland in implementing the assumptions of the energy policy.
Deputy Prime Minister Pawlak thanked IEA head for the presentation of forecasts and essential trends in the global energy market in times of crisis. IEA thinks that it’s possible to achieve the objectives related to reducing energy consumption, including by increasing energy efficiency – he argued. – This should encourage us to focus not only on the matters related to the production of energy, but also on how to develop technologies that help saving it – he added.
Nobuo Tanaka assured that IEA has devoted much attention to efficient energy use. – Using less energy not only improves national energy security, but also is crucial for the climate, due to lower CO2 emissions – he said.
Deputy Prime Minister Pawlak agreed with the IEA Head’s opinion that any technologies which help reduce carbon dioxide production and protect the climate should be explored. – To mitigate the greenhouse effect, we need new, clean technologies and renewable sources of energy – Nobuo Tanaka said.
Poland became a full member of the International Energy Agency in 2008. IEA membership allows Poland to use the support of the Agency in times of energy crisis. The agency was established in 1974 following a proposal by the member states of Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. The main reason to set up the Agency was the oil crisis triggered by the Arab-Israeli war. (MOE)
