PKW SA: a strong and stable fuel supply base
Południowy Koncern Węglowy SA (PKW SA) is a coal company based in the city of Jaworzno, in the Upper Silesian coal basin, southern Poland. It started production operations in July 2005 when it took over the assets and crews of two independent mining plants which had belonged to the Południowy Koncern Energetyczny SA (PKE SA) energy group: Zakład Górniczo-Energetyczny Sobieski Jaworzno III sp. z o.o. (ZG Sobieski) in Jaworzno and Zakład Górniczo-Energetyczny Janina sp. z o.o. (ZG Janina) in Libiąż, Małopolska province.
PKW SA was set up with a view to build a strong and stable fuel supply base delivering coal to PKE SA power stations and heat and power generating plants. PKE SA gained the assurance of long-term coal supplies at competitive prices while the mining plants gained an opportunity to develop and carry out modernisation projects. PKW SA is now part of Tauron Group.
The core business of PKW SA, which is coal mining and dressing, requires continued investments to keep boiler coal production and sales on the domestic market at a high level. The investments made so far have helped to rebuild the coal resources of the mining plants, keep the efficiency of process lines at a required level, improve coal quality, minimise the adverse impact on the environment and improve work safety and welfare facilities for the workforce.
The most important investments in recent years include the purchase of a powered roof support system for ZG Sobieski, a low powered roof support system for ZG Janina, adjusting process lines at ZG Sobieski for the production of the required coal grades and modernising the pre-treatment station and coal washer at the ZPMW coal preparation plant. The capacity of the coal washer was raised to 1,000 tonnes per hour.
Thanks to the transparent and customer-friendly sales policy pursued by PKW SA for years, its share in boiler coal sales on the domestic market has increased to 7%. PKW SA produces 31.2 boiler coal, with fine coals accounting for around 75% of the total output. Coarse coals and medium coals account for 20% and 5% respectively.
In 2009 PKW SA continued the two-segment coal sales policy it had pursued for many years. The power stations and heat and power generating plants in the PKE SA group were the most important market for coal produced by PKW SA. Coal delivered to these commercial generating facilities represented over 60% of the total sales volume.
To meet its customers’ expectations halfway, PKW SA working with its sales partners, continued to launch a new coal fuel on the market. The fuel, called Jaret Plus, is mainly intended for combustion in modern coal-fired boilers with a retort furnace. The fuel, which is a mixture of the Jaret coal grade offered by PKW SA and coal fuels with a high calorific content offered by other producers, is made and distributed by the company’s authorised business partners, who have been carefully selected and worked with PKW SA for many years. PKW SA has introduced a constant fuel quality control system, issuing special approval certificates to the producers, to ensure that the Jaret Plus fuel maintains high and stable parameters.
PKW SA, with its high financial performance and production process efficiency, is one of the leading Polish mining companies. Its two mining plants have a capacity to produce 5.5 million tonnes of commercial coal annually with quality meeting the customers’ requirements.
As forecasts for the size of its coal deposits and demand for coal are favourable, PKW SA will be able to continue mining for at least several decades. The company has taken measures to acquire new mining fields in order to ensure the continuity of production.
