New element named after Copernicus

2010-02-23

A new chemical element created by an international team of scientists has been officially called Copernicium in honour of the Polish astronomer Nicolas Copernicus.

The name, approved by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), has been in force from Feb. 19, the 537th anniversary of the astronomer’s birth. IUPAC officially informed about adopting the name for the new element with atomic number 112 on its website.

Nicolaus Copernicus was the renowned 16th century Polih astronomer, who first formulated a comprehensive heliocentric cosmology, which displaced the Earth from the centre of the universe. His groundbreaking book “On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres” published in 1543 is often regarded as the starting point of modern astronomy.
