Clean energy, clean environment, constant research

2010-02-23

The Central Mining Institute (Główny Instytut Górnictwa, GIG) is a world-renowned geo-engineering research institute and a world leader in studies on mining safety. GIG’s position is confirmed by the many awards and distinctions it has received as well as the international projects it works on together with research and industrial units in the U.S., Australia, China, India, Vietnam, Spain, England, Germany, Russia and Ukraine. Each year GIG participates in about 30 European projects.

„Most important, however, is that our R&D work is geared to the most urgent needs of the market and industry. We develop solutions for direct measurements as well as procedures for the processing and interpretation of measurement data. Our aim is to streamline IT technology into an effective tool for the recognition of factors influencing work safety and the natural environment. Today our work is focused on priority tasks for Poland and Europe”, says GIG General Director Józef Dubiński.

One such priority are CO2 emissions generated by carbon fuels used in industry, especially electricity generation. In this context the development of so-called Clean Coal Technology is a major challenge. In 2009 GIG and the Institute for Chemical Processing of Coal launched a huge project – the construction of a Clean Coal Technology Centre. Modern laboratories will be erected in Katowice and state-of-the-art R&D installations in Mikołów and Zabrze, including above- and underground coal gasification systems. When ready, this centre will enable broadscale research, from major lab projects to pilot research. It will be equipped with the latest appliances, making it one of Europe’s leading R&D units in the clean coal technology field. Most importantly, however, the research results will find direct application in industry, thus helping to make Polish economy more competitive.

The project “Information/Promotion Campaign on Achievements in Science and Knowledge Transfer” is

co-financed by the European Union’s European Social Fund under the Operational Programme Human Capital.
