National Stadium in Warsaw: progress report
Warsaw has celebrated the 500th day of construction of its new National Stadium to be ready for Euro 2012.
On 17 October 2008, the stage 1 of construction was launched, consisting mostly in site preparation for the new stadium and laying deep foundations. The remains of the 10th Anniversary Stadium were demolished, a wide range of clearance work was conducted with 330 000 cubic meters of earth and 6500 cubic meters of crushed concrete removed. Over 14 thousand prefab and bored reinforced concrete piles as well as gravel columns were sunk.
The stage 2 of the construction started in May 2009. It involves construction and installation work needed to complete the facility and make it operational.
At present, construction work is underway involving the reinforced concrete structure of the hollow. As many as over 120,000,000 cubic meters of concrete out of 198,000 cubic meters planned have already been laid.
Preparations are in progress for the assembly of the roof support steel structure that is independent of the reinforced concrete structure. The roof structure is a system of steel ropes spread over a steel support structure. The length of steel roof ropes is 71 km, and their total weight is over 2,000 tons. The roof structure is supported by 72 massive pillars, each of which ca. 33 m in length and 30 tons in weight. The weight of the entire steel structure is 12 400 tons.
During stage 2 of construction, finishing work on the underground and the above-ground part of the stadium will be completed.
Until the end of the construction, work will be delivered on sanitary, mechanical, electrical and low-current systems. The facility will be fitted with elevators and escalators and external work such as roads, green areas and fencing will be provided.
Right now, there are ca. 1200 people working in two shifts at the National Stadium construction site. The reinforced concrete structure is being executed. The top level of the ceiling already built is already on the 7th floor that is on level +2, which will house, in the future, the VIP lounges, conference rooms and offices. Installation work started on the lowest floors, namely -4 and -3.
So far, 6 steel piles and 2 components of the inner ring truss have been delivered to the construction site, for the main steel structure to support the stadium roof. On 18 and 19 February this year, 4 more piles will be delivered to the construction site. Preparations are underway to start the assembly of the steel structure in the second half of March.
Until the end of construction in May 2011, the stadium construction work schedule has a couple of milestones. The first one is June 2010, the completion of the main steel structure of the stadium. Another milestone is early November 2010 – heating to be launched for indoor stadium areas. The third milestone is January 2011 when the roof’s rope structure is to be spread.
