Polish PM appoints the Economic Council
An Economic Council is to be established at the Polish Prime Minister’s Office. The new body will be responsible for reviewing current and planned activities of the government.
Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk is to hand the appointment nominations to its nine members – economists, scientists and businesspeople, the Government Information Centre (CIR) announced. After receiving the nomination, the Council members will meet under the chairmanship of former Prime Minister Jan Krzysztof Bielecki. Bielecki until recently served as President of Poland’s second largest Pekao SA bank.
‘Council members will suggest practical and implementable solutions in the fields they consider important for the economy and citizens. The Council’s task will be also to assess the socio-economic situation of Poland against the events taking place in Europe and global economy. With the exception of the permanent secretary of the Council, its members will carry out their duties as volunteers and will represent their private opinions and knowledge’ the CIR communiqué says.
CIR underlined that the Council members will be persons with many years of experience in public service and private sector. CIR mentioned Prof. Dariusz Filar of the Gdańsk University, chief economic advisor at Pricewatershouse Coopers Polska, Prof. Witold Orłowski, sociologist, Prof. Ireneusz Krzemiński of the University of Warsaw, former president of the Social Insurance Institute (ZUS) Prof. Aleksander Wiktorow, Bogusław Grabowski, Skarbiec Insurance Fund and SAMH president, Andrzej Klesyk, president of PZU, Poland’s larger insurer, Mateusz Morawiecki, president of BZ WBK Bank, chief economist at the Polish Confederation of Private Employers ‘Lewiatan’ Małgorzata Starczewska-Krzysztoszek and Jacek Wiśniewski, chief economist at Reiffeisen Bank Polska.
The work of the Council is to be coordinated by the newly appointed Secretary of State at the Prime Minister’s Chancellery Adam Jasser.
